Wiscasset is a small coastal community located 35 miles north on US 1 from Portland. The town's population is around 3,500 people year around, with a 20 % increase during the summer months. The local economy is based on a bedroom commute with most working in Bath or Augusta.
The Middle School is located on Federal Street (RT 218) along the Sheepscot River. It consists of grades 5-8, with 265+ pupils. It has a teaching staff of 32, divided into teaching teams. Grade 5/6 contain five classrooms with approximately 15 students in each class. The 7th grade contains four content area classrooms; reading/writing, science, history, and math, with approximately 20 students in each class. The 8th grade contains five content area classrooms; reading,writing (two teachers/smaller class size), science, history, and math, with approximately 18 students in each class. Also included in the regular curriculum are the Allied Arts team, which includes art, chorus, band, computer, guidance and physical education. A special services team, which includes special education teachers, Title 1, New Horizons, and the home
school coordinator, provides for the needs of all students identified under the various handicapping codes. A technology teacher oversees all technology related services and equipment in the building.Being a middle school environment the students enjoy many diverse, traditional and real life learning. The use of integrated learning projects designed by the various teams influences these learning situations. Students explore many different facets of real life including student council involvement, yearbook publishing, appreciation of fine arts through participation in drama, chorus and band. For thou students who are more competitive, an interscholastic sport schedule that supports soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, softball, and track is offered.
